(IANS) The 19-year-old BBA student arrested in the alleged abduction and sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl has been refusing to cooperate with investigators and has allegedly been delaying the probe by withholding crucial information. Police sources at Hudkeshwar police station said the accused, identified as Nirbhay alias Akash Madhav Pakhare, has refused to share his mobile phone password and the survivor’s mobile phone, which he allegedly took control of during her 24-hour captivity.

Investigators are facing difficulties in collecting digital evidence as the accused has been avoiding queries. The accused, who had earlier refused medical examination and treatment, was forcibly taken for medical examination on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the accused has been raising complaints about lock-up conditions, including dingy walls, a stinking toilet, mosquito bites and sleepless nights. He has allegedly demanded pizza for breakfast, premium food for dinner, a thick cushion or soft bedding, and installation of insect repellents. “The accused has been keeping the lock-up staff on their toes with repeated demands for VIP treatment. He has also been grumbling about sleepless nights, mosquito bites and demanded a thick cushion or soft bedding and immediate installation of insect repellents in the lock-up," said a senior official. Police sources said the accused has been arguing with officers throughout the day and has allegedly blamed the survivor for his sexual exploits.

The accused had also made serious allegations against police before the special judge on Tuesday, claiming that officials stole Rs 70,000 in cash from his rented flat, assaulted him and refused to return his spectacles and shoes. Police officers told TOI that the accused was attempting to inflict injuries on himself to support his claims. Senior inspector Anamika Mirzapure of Hudkeshwar police station said the police have cooperated with the accused and ensured his basic needs are met. “If any accused demands luxury, soft beds, better food, and constantly argues, we cannot help. The accused is stalling interrogations and refusing to cooperate. We are constantly counselling him," she said. Police officials are monitoring the accused closely to prevent any self-harm attempt while continuing efforts to extract information related to the case.
