(Reuters) Iran-US War: Iran is taking strict measures to keep Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei’s location secret, as US and Israeli intelligence agencies reportedly try to track him. According to reports, Iran has avoided releasing even a single audio message from Khamenei, amid fears that his voice or any electronic communication could provide clues to his whereabouts.

The 57-year-old leader has reportedly stayed away from phones, laptops and other electronic devices for more than 150 days, instead relying on handwritten messages delivered through trusted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) couriers. Meanwhile, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday said communication with Khamenei was “very difficult at the moment", but added that his presence remained a “major source of strength" for the country’s leadership. Pezeshkian made the remarks in an interview with Iranian state media, IRIB. He said that while direct communication was difficult, Mojtaba Khamenei’s role continued to provide support as Iran faced a tense period. Khamenei assumed the position after his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in a US-Israeli strike on February 28, an attack that triggered the wider war in West Asia.

The younger Khamenei was also reportedly wounded in the strike. Since then, he has not appeared publicly. While written statements attributed to him have been released, his prolonged absence has fuelled questions about his health, whereabouts and contact with senior Iranian officials. He was also absent from his father’s funeral ceremonies last month, further deepening speculation around his movements and security arrangements. Reports suggest that the effort to keep Khamenei hidden has forced intelligence agencies to rely heavily on human intelligence rather than conventional digital surveillance.
