75 per cent of the first batch of Agniveers recruited under the Centre's Agnipath scheme are expected to complete their four-year tenure and exit the Armed Forces, the government informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday. Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, in a written reply, said the government has already provided for the reservation of 50 per cent of vacancies for the posts of Constable (General Duty) and Rifleman in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles (AR) for Agniveers.

He added that the first batch of Agniveers has not yet completed its term of engagement. Earlier, Nityanand Rai informed the Lok Sabha that former Agniveers would be eligible for a 50 per cent reservation in recruitment to Constable (General Duty) and Rifleman posts in the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Assam Rifles.
In a written reply, he said a separate "e Agniveer" category has been created for these recruitments, under which half of all vacancies will be earmarked for candidates who have completed service under the Agnipath scheme. The Agnipath scheme, launched in 2022, recruits young men and women between the ages of 17.5 and 21 years for a four-year stint in the Army, Navy and Air Force. Under the scheme, only up to 25 per cent of each batch is retained for permanent service based on merit, medical fitness and organisational requirements.
The remaining personnel exit the forces after four years and receive a severance package, skill certificates and other support measures aimed at facilitating employment opportunities in the civilian sector. The government's reservation policy in CAPFs and Assam Rifles is part of a broader effort to provide post-service career avenues for Agniveers completing their tenure under the scheme. Ends
