Authorities have deported 42 Bangladeshi nationals who were allegedly found living illegally in Odisha’s twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, a senior police officer said on Wednesday. The deportations were carried out between July 2025 and March 2026, while six more people identified in Bhubaneswar are still awaiting repatriation. Police said a total of 48 Bangladeshi nationals were identified by law enforcement agencies under the Bhubaneswar and Cuttack Urban Police Districts. Of them, 42 have already been sent back, while the remaining six are lodged at the state holding centre in Athagarh and are awaiting final administrative clearances.
Read Full Story Police Commissioner of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Suresh Dev Datta Singh said the commissionerate acted after receiving information about the arrival of Bangladeshi infiltrators in the two cities. He said the police detected and arrested them before beginning the deportation process. "With coordination with BSF, the Bangladeshi infiltrators will be deported to their home country through the border adjoining West Bengal," Singh said. He also said that a batch of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants was repatriated directly to Bangladesh by a special chartered flight, while others were sent through land transit checkpoints.
According to official data shared at the briefing, the Bhubaneswar Urban Police District identified 32 Bangladeshis, including 10 men, 17 women and five children, among them three girls. Of these, 26 people were repatriated in three phases between July 2025 and March 2026. In Cuttack, the Urban Police District deported 16 Bangladeshi nationals in three separate operations. Fourteen were deported in July 2025, followed by one in August 2025 and another in July this year.
Police said deportations across both urban jurisdictions were carried out smoothly, with deportees handed over at designated land border checkpoints through West Bengal as well as through special flight arrangements. Ends
