The flood situation in Assam worsened on Wednesday, with the death toll in this year’s deluge rising to 95 and the number of affected people increasing to more than 1.6 lakh across 14 districts, according to an official bulletin. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority said six people died in the last 24 hours. The number of affected people also went up sharply from more than 1.22 lakh across five districts on Tuesday to over 1,60,600 across 14 districts on Wednesday.
Read Full Story According to the ASDMA bulletin issued in the evening, two people each drowned in floodwaters in Sivasagar and Biswanath districts, while one person each died in Golaghat and Morigaon. With these deaths, the total number of people killed in this year’s floods has risen to 95. The authority’s daily flood report said people were affected in Biswanath, Charaideo, Darrang, Dhemaji, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Lakhimpur, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts. Sivasagar was the worst-hit district with more than 57,000 people affected, followed by Golaghat with 34,000 and Jorhat with 25,000.
The administration has been operating 105 relief camps and relief distribution centres in six districts, where 44,523 affected people are being looked after at present. In the last 24 hours, the authorities distributed 528.44 quintals of rice, 126.72 quintals of dal, 73.21 quintals of salt and 2,519.64 litres of mustard oil among flood victims. The ASDMA said 563 villages are under water and 16,951.76 hectares of crop area have been damaged across the state. Floodwaters have also damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in different districts.
The Dhansiri river was flowing above the danger level at Numaligarh. The floods have also affected 35,025 domestic animals and poultry across Assam, while 8,529 more have been washed away. Overall, the flood situation in Assam deteriorated further on Wednesday, with deaths rising, more districts coming under the impact of the deluge, and damage reported to villages, crops, infrastructure and livestock.
