Meta has offered an apology to the Government of India over child abuse and deepfake content on Instagram and Facebook. The tech giant also apologised for taking down a video featuring the Prime Minister addressing students and admitted that funds were spent to boost certain content. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and the IT Parliamentary Committee are continuing to press Meta, suspecting a larger conspiracy rather than a mere technical glitch.
Meta agreed to put stringent rules and back-end checks in place. However, the Indian government has called Meta officials for further questioning to obtain the exact technical reason behind the removal of the Prime Minister's video.
