In a bid to prevent waterlogging in the city, the restoration of various canals will be expedited. Restoration work on the Mullassery Canal will also resume on September 1 and is expected to be completed by March. The decisions were taken at a review meeting of ‘Operation Breakthrough’ chaired by District Collector G. Priyanka. Directions were issued to the Kochi Corporation Secretary to intensify inspections to identify the sources of banned single-use plastic products and impose fines on violators.
The meeting also noted that the cleaning of the mouth of T.P. Canal has been completed and that the Public Works Department (PWD) has completed work to address waterlogging issues in the High Court area. Instructions have also been issued to the Kochi Corporation to urgently clean the drains in the KSRTC bus stand area, where waste is being illegally dumped. Steps will be taken to relocate the shops operating over these drains. Measures to prevent waterlogging in various parts of the city are also under way, according to a communication.
Silt and sludge removed during the cleaning of drains and canals must not be piled up along roadsides. The Minor Irrigation Department and the corporation must ensure that the material is transported to silt yards at the time of awarding contracts, it was decided. The meeting also noted that the tendering process to address waterlogging issues at Jose Junction and the jetting work on T.D. Road have been completed. The PWD was instructed to find an immediate solution to the waterlogging near Central Mall on M.G. Road.
The Highways Authority of India reported that the box culvert work near Edappally Oberon Mall has been completed. An urgent report has been sought from the Railway Department regarding the delay in the tendering process for the box culvert at Kammatippadam. New contractual conditions to ensure cleanliness and waste management were also proposed during the meeting.
