(IMAGE: REUTERS) US President Donald Trump may support Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to succeed him, as they would make an unbeatable ticket if they run together. The two top leaders are seen as contenders for the 2028 Republican nomination. Interestingly, Rubio has not only been praised and supported by the Republicans, some Democrats have also reportedly hailed his performance.
“I like them both. I like them together," Trump said on The New York Post podcast “Pod Force One". “I don’t know how you beat them if they’re together." He, however, pointed out that the two men would have to agree to it, while adding that “they get along really well". He did not venture to say who should be at the top of the ticket, AFP reported. As of now, Rubio and Vance have not yet declared their intention to run for the next presidential elections. Previously, Rubio had said that he considers Vance as a friend and insisted that he would not run in 2028 if Vance is a candidate. According to AFP, recent polls have suggested that Vance and Rubio are nearly tied among Republican voters. This comes as Donald Trump will not be able to run for the 2028 Presidential elections due to the 22nd Amendment of the US Constitution.
What Does The US Constitution Say? As per the 22nd Amendment, “No person shall be elected to the office of the president more than twice, and no person who has held the office of president, or acted as president, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected president shall be elected to the office of the president more than once." BBC quoted Derek Muller, an election law professor at the University of Notre Dame, saying that the Constitution’s 12th Amendment says “no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of president shall be eligible to that of vice-president of the United States". This means, any person serving two terms in office disqualifies the person from running for even a vice-presidential candidate.
