In an exclusive interview with India Today, education reformer and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk reflected on his 26-day fast against nationwide examination irregularities and paper leaks. Addressing student protests emerging across states like Jharkhand, Wangchuk remarked, "A silent, uh, population is the worst thing that a, um, governance system could get," emphasizing that citizens must voice concerns to keep the government accountable.
He clarified his role in urging protesters to adopt hunger strikes with water and salt rather than self-harm. Wangchuk detailed the events surrounding the end of his fast, alleging that government representatives breached an agreement by releasing photographs before a joint political announcement could be made. He expressed disappointment with political leadership across parties and addressed allegations regarding his NGO's FCRA license and past detention under the Security Act.
Regarding the resignation of the Union Education Minister, Wangchuk noted, "Resignation is a great beginning of accountability," while calling for deeper systemic reforms and fair treatment of protesting students.
