“The hostage situation concluded following an officer-involved shooting involving Federal Bureau of Investigation personnel," Bakersfield police said in a news release. The New York Times quoted the police saying that it had received a call around 1 pm on Tuesday about a bomb threat at a Chase Bank in the city’s downtown. A man had barricaded himself in the building with several people inside. The situation continued till Wednesday morning. “During the investigation, it was determined that an adult male subject had barricaded himself inside the building with several community members," the police said. Associated Press quoted the police saying that the hostages were found unharmed inside the downtown Bakersfield building that houses a bank and a school district office.
According to CNN, police tape was stretched across several intersections as the area around the building was cordoned off. Government buildings – including City Hall and police headquarters – were put on lockdown as a precaution. “Every single resource is at the site’s disposal," Bakersfield police Sgt. Eric Celedon said Tuesday afternoon. “SWAT team, bomb squad, gang team, gang unit, negotiators, drone team. Every single asset we have to bring this to a state of conclusion is out here right now." CNN quoted police saying that no hostages were hurt, but they were given medical attention at the scene.
