Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday ruled out reports of a special session of Parliament from August 16 to 18 to take up the women's reservation and delimitation bills, saying no such proposal was under consideration. His clarification comes amid speculation that the government could convene a special sitting after Independence Day to push the two key constitutional measures. "There is no proposal to have any special session from August 16 to 18 on women's reservation and delimitation bills," Rijiju told PTI.
Read Full Story The statement comes even as the government continues consultations during the ongoing Monsoon Session to build support for the reintroduction of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, which seeks to provide 33 per cent reservation for women in legislatures from 2029 and redraw Lok Sabha constituencies, increasing their strength to 816. The renewed push follows an earlier attempt nearly four months ago that failed to secure enough support for passage. As part of its outreach, Rijiju met Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi to discuss the proposed legislation, sources familiar with the developments said.
However, the sources said the minister did not receive any commitment from the Congress leader. The government is also expected to reach out to other Opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party and the DMK, to gauge their position on the proposed constitutional amendment. GOVERNMENT TO CONTINUE CONSULTATIONS Government sources said if the Centre decides to reintroduce the delimitation bill, it would do so during the ongoing Monsoon Session rather than convening a separate special session immediately after Independence Day. A government floor manager also dismissed speculation over a special sitting, pointing out that Parliament still has another week of business left in the current session.
The Centre is expected to continue consultations with political parties on the proposed women's reservation and delimitation measures during the remainder of the Monsoon Session while ruling out any special session from August 16 to 18. Ends
