Rukhsar Ahmed, 62, who was re-elected last week as a member of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, was arrested at Manchester Airport on July 18, 2024, in connection with historical child sexual abuse allegations linked to the Rusholme area of Manchester, where he lived for several years.

Ahmed is currently on police bail while Greater Manchester Police (GMP) continue their investigation. Re-elected in Pakistan While on UK Police Bail Ahmed, who represents Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), returned to elected office after a five-year gap. He had served as a minister in various state governments between 2006 and 2021, before losing his seat. The report said Ahmed was expected to answer police bail in Manchester last month but failed to appear, reportedly telling authorities he was “too unwell to fly." However, during the same period, photographs shared on social media showed him campaigning at election events in Mirpur in PoK. Allegations Linked to Manchester Care Homes According to The Guardian, detectives questioned Ahmed over allegations made by at least two women who claimed they were raped and trafficked when they were young girls living in care during the early 1990s. The ongoing investigation relates to allegations made by several women concerning child sexual abuse in care homes in Manchester, when Ahmed was in his late twenties.

The report added that investigators became aware of Ahmed’s political role in Pakistan only after he was taken into custody for questioning. Travel Restrictions and Bail Conditions The report said Greater Manchester Police had sought stricter bail conditions to restrict Ahmed from travelling abroad. However, a judge reportedly rejected the request in July 2024. Ahmed is expected to answer police bail within the next six weeks, if he fails to appear again, Greater Manchester Police could seek an arrest warrant or initiate extradition proceedings. Political Party Says It Was Unaware of Allegations A senior PML-N leader in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir told that he had known Ahmed for nearly two decades but was unaware of the allegations. “We just heard that he was part of some groups in Manchester in the 1990s. But I personally didn’t know such severe allegations existed against Ahmed," the party leader was quoted as saying. Business and Community Links in Manchester Ahmed previously owned Gujjar Palace, a restaurant near Manchester’s Curry Mile, and is said to have maintained close ties with the city’s Pakistani community.
