Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay announced that his party would allocate the lone Rajya Sabha seat falling vacant in Tamil Nadu to alliance partner Congress. The vacancy arose after AIADMK leader C Ve Shanmugam resigned from the Rajya Sabha following his victory from the Mailam Assembly constituency in the April 23 Assembly elections. Announcing the decision, Vijay said the seat would be allotted to Congress as part of the TVK-led alliance in the state.
He said, “As Rajya Sabha election is to be held in Tamil Nadu on the 18th of this month, a seat has been allocated to the All India Congress party, which is part of the alliance led by TVK in Tamil Nadu." The announcement came amid a series of meetings involving senior Congress leaders, including former Union finance minister P Chidambaram and Tamil Nadu Congress in-charge Girish Chodankar. Following a meeting with Chief Minister Vijay at the Secretariat, Chodankar said Congress would strengthen its representation in the Rajya Sabha through the Tamil Nadu seat.

As the single largest party in the House, TVK possesses the numbers required to ensure the victory of the alliance nominee in the June 18 Rajya Sabha election. The allocation effectively clears the path for Congress to secure another representative in Parliament’s Upper House. The Rajya Sabha vacancy was created after AIADMK leader C Ve Shanmugam resigned from the Upper House following his election as MLA from Mailam in the Assembly polls held earlier this year. The Election Commission subsequently announced the schedule for the by-election to fill the vacant seat.
