(IMAGE: PTI) Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday met student protesters at Jantar Mantar, backed their demands over alleged irregularities in the education system and criticised the government’s handling of the police action, seeking accountability from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Calling the protesters “exactly the type of youngsters that this country needs", Gandhi said they had shown courage by speaking out despite facing “harassment, violence and torture". Targeting the government over the alleged police action, Gandhi claimed the Union Home Ministry was responsible and said Union Home Minister Amit Shah should explain the incident in Parliament. He also alleged that students protesting issues such as exam paper leaks and the state of the education system were beaten, assaulted and threatened. Referring to a teenage protester, Gandhi further alleged that a 15-year-old girl was forced to apologise after people were sent to her home, calling the episode “complete nonsense". “Complaining about the education system… is not a crime. If anything, the system needs to be changed," Gandhi said, adding that students wanted exam leaks to stop and the future of the country’s youth to be respected and protected.
The Opposition has been constantly pressing the issue of Delhi Police’s alleged action on protesting students at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar during the July 20 Sansad Chalo march called by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). The Lok Sabha was also adjourned till 2 PM on Wednesday, minutes after it was convened, amid continued disruptions in the House. Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge reiterated the opposition’s demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah make statements in Parliament. “We demand that Prime Minister Modi Ji and Home Minister Amit Shah come to the House. They should give their statement; we are ready to discuss. The solution will emerge only through discussion," Kharge said.
