The Telangana Drugs Control Administration (DCA) seized Gabazen tablets containing the prescription drug gabapentin during a raid in Malakpet after officials found that the product was allegedly being manufactured and marketed as a nutraceutical under a food licence.
Gabapentin is a prescription medicine used to treat nerve pain and to help control certain types of seizures. The raid was conducted on August 4, during which DCA officials detected Gabazen tablets containing Gabapentin 300 mg circulating in the market under the guise of a ‘food product/nutraceutical’.
According to the DCA, the product was manufactured by Gothic Pharmaceuticals Private Limited at Cherlapally Industrial Development Area in Medchal Malkajgiri district and marketed by Hyderabad-based Sifco Ayustar. The product was manufactured under an FSSAI licence and claimed to be a food product or nutraceutical, officials said.
However, based on its composition, the product is classified as a drug under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940.
