(IMAGE: REUTERS) Sajeeb Wazed, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on Wednesday claimed that Bangladesh had become a “failed state" and warned that the country’s deteriorating security situation could pose a long-term threat to India.

Addressing the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia in New Delhi, Wazed alleged that Bangladesh was witnessing democratic backsliding, political exclusion and a collapse of law and order following the ouster of the Awami League government. Wazed delivered the opening remarks before Sheikh Hasina addressed the gathering via video link. In her speech, the former prime minister defended her government’s handling of the July-August 2024 unrest, alleging the protests that culminated in her ouster were “not a peaceful student movement" but an organised campaign that turned a quota reform movement into a “violent political instrument" aimed at regime change. “Bangladesh today is not a failing state. It is a failed state," he said, alleging there was “no human rights" and “no freedom of speech" in the country. Wazed further claimed that media organisations had come under pressure ahead of the event, alleging that intelligence agencies instructed major television channels and newspapers not to carry coverage of the programme or reports from international media.

Warning of security implications for India, Wazed claimed Bangladesh had become “another Pakistan" on India’s eastern frontier. “What should concern India most is Bangladesh has become another Pakistan on India’s eastern front," he said. He alleged that hundreds of convicted militants jailed during the Awami League’s tenure had been released and claimed that extremist organisations, including Hizb ut-Tahrir, were now operating openly in Bangladesh. “In the future, the next set of terrorists globally are going to be coming from Bangladesh unless this is stopped now," Wazed said. The remarks came during an event hosted by the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia, where former prime minister Sheikh Hasina also addressed the gathering via video link and defended her government’s handling of the 2024 protests that culminated in her ouster.
