A schedule-I sambar deer (Rusa Unicolor), classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, was rescued by the Forest department officials after falling into the Handri Neeva Sujala Sravanthi (HNSS) Canal near Penukonda in Sri Sathya Sai district on Wednesday.
A forest official said that the deer was searching for water when it slipped into the canal, and its injuries prevented it from reaching the bank. The HANUMAN project team of the Forest department rushed to the spot and rescued the animal within 20 minutes.
The deer was later transferred to the Karuna Society Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Puttaparthi for veterinary examination and treatment. “After the animal recovers from its
injuries, it will be released back into the wild,” the officials said.
