(Photo: AFP file) Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday announced that she would return to her homeland, saying that she was ready to face any consequences, including arrest, imprisonment or threats to her life. Addressing her first media briefing from New Delhi virtually after leaving Bangladesh, Hasina said she could not remain away while her supporters and people of Bangladesh were facing difficulties.

“Whatever fate awaits me, I will return to my people. I cannot stay away while my beloved countrymen are suffering… I want to go back in the month of December," she said. The former prime minister added that she was aware of the risks involved in returning. “‘They may kill me, put me in jail… I know I may get detained, I may be sent to prison, they may try to force politically motivated fabricated cases, but fear cannot decide my duty to the people. My life went beyond calculations of personal safety long ago," Hasina said. Hasina Recalls Past Struggles During the briefing, Hasina recalled the challenges she faced throughout her political journey, including imprisonment, exile and personal losses. “In 1971, I was in imprisonment with my mother. My son Joy was born in captivity.

In 1975, I lost my family. I spent six years in exile," she said. She said her decision to return was driven by her desire to stand with the people of Bangladesh. “I want to return to Bangladesh for one purpose: to stand beside the people and help improve their lives," Hasina said. Hasina Demands Lifting Of Awami League Ban Hasina also called for the removal of restrictions imposed on her party, the Awami League. She demanded that the ban on the party be lifted, Awami League leaders be released and legal cases against party members be withdrawn. Her remarks came amid continued political uncertainty in Bangladesh following her departure from the country and the subsequent changes in the political landscape. Hasina, who served as Bangladesh’s prime minister for multiple terms, has remained in India since leaving Dhaka following widespread unrest and protests that led to the collapse of her government in 2024.
