Scientific excellence, innovation, perseverance, teamwork and meticulous planning helped engineers overcome extraordinary technical challenges to construct the Chenab Railway Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir, one of the worldâs most difficult terrains, said G. Madhavi Latha, Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, on Wednesday (August 5, 2026). Presenting the 83rd Foundation Day Lecture at CSIR-Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) in Hyderabad, Ms. Madhavi Latha spoke on the construction of the worldâs highest railway arch bridge and highlighted the dedication behind the landmark engineering feat.
She worked as a geotechnical consultant for it. The Professor urged young researchers and scientists to pursue their work with passion and commitment. âWork with passion without expectations and never be afraid of failure. Failures and setbacks are an integral part of scientific discovery,â she said. Emphasising the role of technological innovation in research, she said scientists should strive for excellence with resilience, integrity and a long-term vision rather than seeking immediate recognition.
CSIR-IICT Director D. Srinivas Reddy expressed deep admiration for Ms. Madhavi Lathaâs contribution to one of Indiaâs most challenging engineering projects. Having personally experienced the difficult terrain and harsh climatic conditions of J&K, he noted that her
achievements reflected exceptional determination and engineering expertise. Reddy said CSIR-IICT continues to remain at the forefront of research in chemical sciences, pharmaceuticals, catalysis, biotechnology, process engineering, materials science, environmental technologies and sustainable manufacturing, according to a press release.
