(Representative Image) China on Wednesday unveiled a series of economic measures against the United States, imposing tighter controls on drone exports, blacklisting six American entities and introducing other restrictions in response to recent actions taken by Washington. The announcement comes days after the United States imposed fresh tariffs on China and 59 other countries, adding to a series of trade measures between the two sides. Beijing Cites US Restrictions as Trigger China’s Commerce Ministry said the latest steps were prompted by several recent US actions, including the Federal Communications Commission’s ban on imports of Chinese drones and the Department of Homeland Security’s decision to add 43 Chinese companies to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act entity list, restricting imports of goods allegedly made with forced labour.

In a statement, the ministry said the US measures “seriously violate the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and severely damage China’s legitimate rights and interests." It added that China had “no choice but to take necessary countermeasures" and urged Washington to withdraw the restrictions and end what it called its “erroneous practices." The ministry also warned that China could impose further sanctions if the United States introduced additional restrictive measures. Drone Exports to Face Case-by-Case Reviews As part of the new measures, Beijing will require case-by-case government reviews for exports of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), their key components and related technologies that are listed as export-controlled dual-use items with both civilian and military applications. Six US Entities Sanctioned China has banned six US entities from engaging in trade or other activities with Chinese organisations. The list includes Applied DNA Sciences, Inc. and the non-governmental organisation Human Rights in China.

In a separate announcement, the Commerce Ministry said Compliance Testing LLC has also been barred from conducting business in China, alleging that it worked with the US Federal Communications Commission in ways that harmed China’s sovereignty and security. Probe Into Imported Office Equipment The Commerce Ministry also said it is investigating the possible national security impact of imported printing software and office equipment, though it did not identify the companies involved. Separately, China’s State Administration for Market Regulation announced that US companies carrying out follow-up factory inspections on behalf of Chinese firms for China Compulsory Certification (CCC) will no longer be permitted to provide those certification services. Measures Come Ahead of Xi’s Expected US Visit The latest actions come as tensions continue between the world’s two largest economies ahead of an expected visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping to the United States in September. The move follows signs of improving ties after Xi met US President Donald Trump in Beijing in May, even as both countries continue to exchange trade and national security measures.
