A seven-month-old marriage ended in tragedy in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi after a heated argument between a newlywed couple allegedly led to the husband consuming poison and the wife being found hanging from the ceiling of her house on Monday night, police said. The husband, Sagar Sahu, is in critical condition and undergoing treatment at a hospital in Jhansi, while his wife Radha was found dead at their house in Babina town. Read Full Story However, the woman’s family has alleged foul play, saying her in-laws killed her over dowry and hung her from the ceiling to stage a suicide, and demanded action. The incident occurred near the Ganesh Temple area of Babina, where Sagar’s family lives. According to the police, Sagar and Radha had recently arrived from Ashoknagar in Madhya Pradesh. A dispute reportedly broke out between the couple late Monday night, though the exact cause of the argument is yet to be established.
Police said Sagar allegedly consumed a poisonous substance after the quarrel. When his condition worsened, family members took him to the Community Health Centre in Babina. Doctors administered first aid and referred him to Jhansi Medical College because of his critical condition. He was later shifted to a private hospital in Jhansi and remains in the intensive care unit. While most family members were away taking Sagar to hospital, Radha stayed at home. When relatives returned, they found her hanging from a scarf tied to the ceiling. The Babina police were informed and reached the spot to begin legal proceedings. The body was sent for post-mortem examination after preliminary investigation. Since the marriage had not completed seven years, a magisterial inquiry has also been ordered as required under law. Police said further action would be taken on the basis of the post-mortem report and the findings of the inquiry.
WOMAN’S FAMILY ALLEGES FOUL PLAY According to family members, Sagar and Radha were married on November 25, 2025. They knew each other before marriage and had married to the consent of both families. However, Radha’s relatives have alleged dowry harassment by her in-laws. Her uncle claimed that a demand of Rs 10 lakh had been made and that she was allegedly subjected to pressure when the amount could not be arranged. He said, "My niece’s wedding took place here in Babina Cantt with Sagar Sahu—it was a love marriage. The issue arose because they were demanding a dowry of Rs 10 lakh". He further alleged that the family was told Radha would not be sent back unless the money was paid. "We did not have the means to arrange that amount. Consequently, they began harassing and tormenting her; she kept calling us, saying they were insisting on the money, but we simply couldn't arrange it," he said.
