The Tamil Nadu government plans to undertake renovation works and perform Thirukudamuzhukku (consecration) at 3,000 temples and restore 84 temple cars over the next five years, Finance Minister Marie Wilson announced on Wednesday (August 5, 2026). Presenting the Revised Budget Estimates in the Legislative Assembly, he said the government would also upgrade basic amenities at temples that attract large numbers of devotees by providing safe drinking water, restrooms, bathrooms, accommodation, and other essential infrastructure.
An allocation of ₹708 crore has been made for the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department in the Revised Budget Estimates. The Minister said the government had recognised the need to appoint trustees to temples and had issued notifications for the appointment of trustees to 9,205 temples within a short span.
Action was under way to complete the appointments. Restoration and conservation works were also being carried out at 213 temples that are over 1,000 years old, at an
estimated cost of ₹418 crore. Besides introducing structural reforms in the HR&CE Department, the government was also focusing on safeguarding the movable and immovable properties of temples, he added.
