Maharashtra has imposed a complete ban on the manufacturing, processing, storage, and sale of Analogue or non-dairy cheese, becoming the second Indian state after Chhattisgarh to do so. The state government announced the move to protect consumer health and prevent imitation cheese from being sold as genuine dairy products.
Violators face up to six months in jail and a fine of up to 1 lakh rupees under the Food Safety and Standards Act, while cases where unsafe food causes death carry life imprisonment. Analog cheese uses vegetable fats like palm oil and starches instead of milk fat, posing health concerns.
