An awareness programme was organized in Hyderabad following reports of falling fertility rates in Telangana. Doctors highlighted that Telangana's fertility rate has fallen below the national replacement rate of 2.1, standing at 1.4 in urban areas and 1.5 to 1.6 in rural areas. Experts attributed the decline to a cumulative effect of stress, environmental pollution, delayed marriages, and changing lifestyles, noting that younger generations are increasingly marrying after thirty.
The discussion emphasized the need to combat online misinformation and guide couples on choosing proper fertility clinics. Addressing concerns over unregulated IVF centres and surrogacy practices, doctors explained that the Assisted Reproductive Technology Act 2021, enacted with rules in June 2022, provides clear legal guidelines, duties, and penalties to ensure ethical, safe, and transparent practices across ART banks and clinics.
Southern state governments are also urging people to have more children as state fertility rates continue to drip.
