Under the DMA, large tech firms dubbed "gatekeepers" are legally required to make their hardware and software play nicely with rival platforms.
Apple already offers an effortless copy-and-paste feature called Universal Clipboard for its own ecosystem, leaving Windows and PC users out in the cold. Microsoft pushed for a seamless background sync, arguing that copying text between devices should feel natural rather than like an extra chore. How the new copy-paste feature will work Currently, iOS security restrictions prevent third-party apps from reading an iPhone’s clipboard unless the app is actively open on the screen and the user grants permission for every single action. Apple’s proposed solution changes this dynamic by treating a paired Windows PC similarly to a connected wearable accessory.
By adopting Apple’s developer framework, known as AccessorySetupKit, developers can request a one-time permission prompt. Once a user grants this initial green light, text, links, and supported media will copy and paste back and forth in the background seamlessly, eliminating constant permission pop-ups. While the idea sounds fantastic, users may need to exercise a little patience. Apple has reportedly described this cross-device feature as a major technical undertaking, aiming to finish engineering work by late 2027. Once developer testing is complete, the public rollout could stretch into early 2028. Meanwhile, Apple is preparing to roll out its next-generation iPhone 18 Pro series in September.
