(AP Photo) The Australian Open organisers have announced that the million-dollar 1 Point Slam will be back at the 2027 Australian Open, following the success of its inaugural edition. The fan-favourite event from last January will once again offer a top prize of one million Australian dollars ($705,000 at current exchange rates).
The competition will be held ahead of the Australian Open main draw, scheduled for January 17-31 at Melbourne Park. The inaugural 1 Point Slam produced a surprise champion in Jordan Smith, a little-known local amateur player who defeated Jannik Sinner before going on to become an Australian dollar millionaire. Smith secured the title in the final after Joanna Garland, the women’s No. 117 from Taiwan, sent a two-handed backhand wide on the third stroke of the deciding point. Each match in the knockout competition lasted only a single point and featured a mix of men and women, professionals and amateurs, along with celebrities. Taiwanese pop star Jay Chou was among those involved, exiting the tournament without hitting a ball after Petar Jovic hit an ace.
The event also featured appearances from Carlos Alcaraz, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Alexander Zverev and Naomi Osaka. “My journey started at a qualifying event at Sydney Olympic Park — I never expected it would lead to me stepping onto Rod Laver Arena and competing against world-class players, let alone walking away as the winner. It completely changed my life," Smith said in an Australian Open statement Wednesday. “This year we’ll be hosting an event at our own club and hopefully inspiring more players to give it a go, just like I did. You never know where it might take you," Smith added. From next week, affiliated clubs, associations, coaches and partner schools across Australia will be able to register their interest in hosting a 1 Point Slam qualifying event ahead of the Melbourne Park final.
