A 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 18-year-old cousin in Uttar Pradesh's Bhadohi district, police said on Wednesday. The accused, whose family had recently come from Delhi to the village, was arrested late Tuesday from the Sitamarhi area while allegedly trying to flee. Police said the incident took place on Monday afternoon in the Koirauna area when the girl's mother had gone to offer prayers at the Baba Semradh Nath Dham Temple on the first Monday of the holy month of Shravan.

According to Koirauna Police Station in-charge Manish Dwivedi, "The victim's uncle and his family, who reside in Delhi, had arrived in the village five days ago. Taking advantage of the girl being alone, her 18-year-old cousin allegedly raped her and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident." When the girl's mother returned home in the evening, she found her daughter bleeding and, on being asked, the girl told her about the incident, the officer said.
The family initially stayed silent, treating it as an internal family matter, but later went to the police after the girl's condition deteriorated. Based on the complaint, police registered a case against the accused under Sections 65(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, related to the rape of a minor, and 351(3), related to criminal intimidation, along with relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Dwivedi said, "The girl's condition is now stable. Her statement will be recorded before a magistrate under court proceedings once she is discharged." Police said the accused would be produced before a competent court on Wednesday.
The case relates to the alleged rape of a minor by her cousin in Bhadohi, the delayed police complaint after her health worsened, and the arrest of the accused, who now faces charges under the BNS and the POCSO Act. Ends
