(You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Marie Wilson on Wednesday tabled the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam government's maiden budget for the financial year 2026-27 in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, announcing a series of welfare schemes including an 8 gram gold coin and a silk saree for women at the time of their wedding.The scheme, under which women will receive an 8 gram gold coin and one silk saree at the time of their wedding, has been allocated Rs 812 crore in the budget, Wilson announced.Separately, Wilson announced that Rs 560 crore will be allocated under the Thaai Maaman Thanga Modhira Thittam scheme to provide 1 gram gold rings to children born in government hospitals across the state.College students will receive laptops under the Vetri Madikanini Thittam scheme, with Rs 2,000 crore allocated for it. School students described as Gen Z will receive cycles along with helmets and bottle holders, with Rs 777 crore set aside for that scheme.Wilson announced a target of building Tamil Nadu into a Rs 1.5 trillion dollar economy by 2036.The budget was tabled amid a political face-off in the assembly between Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin.
