Sources had earlier told CNN-News18 that Hasina will join the interaction through a live audio link from India and is expected to remain connected throughout the event. While she is scheduled to make a brief opening statement, whether she takes questions from journalists will be decided by her at the time of the interaction.
Sources close to the former Bangladeshi Prime Minister told CNN-News18 that Hasina will not appear on camera during the press conference. Instead, she will join live via an audio link, dismissing speculation that a pre-recorded message would be played. The source also said Hasina is expected to begin the event with a short “thank you" note for journalists attending the press conference. However, the contents of her remarks remain closely guarded, with even members of her inner circle reportedly unaware of what she plans to say. “The decision on whether she takes questions will be entirely her discretion," the source told CNN-News18. First Live Media Interaction In Two Years According to news agency PTI, the virtual press conference at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club will mark Hasina’s first direct interaction with the media since she fled Bangladesh on August 5, 2024, following the collapse of her government amid massive anti-government protests. Although the Awami League leader has given a series of email interviews over the past several months, Wednesday’s event will be her first live media appearance. Hasina, 78, has been living in India since leaving Dhaka.
She has already announced plans to return to Bangladesh by the end of this year and is expected to elaborate on those plans during the press conference. Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, along with several senior Awami League leaders, including Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel and former Bangladesh cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, are also expected to participate in the event. Comes Amid Legal And Political Challenges The media interaction comes as Hasina continues to face legal proceedings in Bangladesh. According to PTI, a special tribunal in Dhaka last November sentenced the former Prime Minister to death in absentia over alleged “crimes against humanity" linked to her government’s crackdown on student-led protests in 2024. Following the verdict, the Bangladeshi government urged India to extradite Hasina so she could face trial. India-Bangladesh Ties Under Recovery Relations between India and Bangladesh deteriorated sharply after the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus assumed power following Hasina’s ouster. However, efforts to restore diplomatic ties gathered pace earlier this year. India was represented by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, accompanied by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, at the swearing-in ceremony of Prime Minister Rahman on February 17 after his party secured a landslide victory in parliamentary elections.
