In an order issued in a post on X on Tuesday, Maharashtra NCP (SP) president and former minister Shashikant Shinde said all previous appointments to the spokesperson post had been cancelled with immediate effect from August 4, 2026, until further orders. Shinde has recently appointed Sushil Borde as president of the party’s student wing, Vishal Wakadkar as youth wing president and Ram Rathod as president of its teachers’ cell. One of the former spokespersons said the decision came as a surprise. “We have no idea about the sudden decision. It must be part of the organisational overhaul that is underway. The reshuffle comes amid speculation about the political direction of the Sharad Pawar-led party and reports of a possible rapprochement between the NCP (SP) and the Ajit Pawar-led NCP faction. The speculation has intensified following a series of meetings in Mumbai involving NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil, senior NCP leaders Praful Patel and Sunil Tatkare, and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Sharad Pawar chose to stay quiet amid reports of a possible split within his party’s ranks, firmly deflecting the speculation by stating, “That’s not the subject to talk about right now." The NCP(SCP) patriarch’s guarded response marks a notable shift in tone from June, when he asserted that while rival factions like the Shiv Sena (UBT) had fractured, his own camp remained entirely intact, declaring, “Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs have split, but none of our MPs will split." Sources told CNN-News18 that discussions are underway on a possible formula under which the Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar factions could reunite before aligning with the NDA. If a merger does not materialise, the Sharad Pawar faction could either join the NDA as a separate entity or extend support to the government from within or outside the alliance, sources said. Separately, there is chatter that the NDA is looking to bring Pawar’s faction on board to get the numbers needed for the Delimitation Bill in the Lok Sabha as the Centre plans to bring the bill again in the ongoing Monsoon Session.
