Trisha Remark Row: Has Vijay Given Udhayanidhi Stalin His Biggest Political Opportunity Yet? Written By, Last Updated: August 05, 2026, 09:31 IST Instead of focusing solely on how Udhayanidhi entered politics, the conversation is increasingly shifting towards how he performs as the principal face of the Opposition Rapid Read Today, Udhayanidhi Stalin is increasingly identified as the Opposition's frontline campaigner. (PTI) For years, Udhayanidhi Stalin’s political career was viewed through the prism of his surname. The grandson of former chief minister M Karunanidhi and son of DMK president MK Stalin, Udhayanidhi’s rapid rise from actor and producer to MLA, minister and later deputy chief minister, made him one of the most recognisable faces of Tamil Nadu politics. It also made him one of its most criticised, with rivals frequently portraying him as the beneficiary of dynastic succession rather than political struggle. But if there’s one thing history has taught us, it’s that politics has a way of reshaping public perception. ALSO READ | Trisha Never Entered Politics. So Why Is She At The Centre Of Tamil Nadu’s Biggest Row? The DMK’s defeat in the 2026 assembly elections and its transition to the Opposition thrust Udhayanidhi into an unfamiliar role. No longer part of the government, he has become the party’s most visible campaigner against chief minister Vijay’s government, leading protests, taking on the ruling dispensation in the Assembly and on the streets, and now finding himself at the centre of a political storm following his arrest over remarks directed at the chief minister and his long-time friend, actress Trisha. The developments raise an interesting political question: Is Udhayanidhi finally being seen as a leader in his own right rather than merely the latest heir to the DMK’s first family? The Weight Of A Famous Surname Few politicians have entered public life carrying expectations as high as Udhayanidhi. The DMK has long been synonymous with the Karunanidhi family.
After M Karunanidhi’s death, MK Stalin consolidated his position as the party chief and chief minister. Udhayanidhi, who had built a successful career in Tamil cinema as an actor and producer, entered electoral politics in 2022 by winning the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni assembly seat. Within a short span, he was inducted into the Cabinet and later elevated to deputy chief minister. The speed of that rise fuelled criticism from the Opposition, particularly the BJP and AIADMK, which accused the DMK of institutionalising dynastic politics. The party, however, consistently argued that Udhayanidhi had worked within its youth wing for years, campaigned extensively during elections and had earned his place through organisational work and public outreach. Even so, the “dynasty" label remained central to the political conversation surrounding him. How Opposition Politics ‘Changes’ Political Leaders Holding office and leading an Opposition are two very different political tests. ALSO READ | ‘What’s His Name? Vulgar-Nidhi?’: TVK Defends Udhayanidhi Stalin’s Arrest Over Trisha Remark While a minister derives authority from government, an opposition leader derives authority from mobilisation. Leading demonstrations, taking political risks, confronting the government, facing police action and articulating public grievances often become defining moments in an opposition leader’s career. Across Indian politics, many leaders have strengthened their political credentials not while in office but while resisting those in power. That transition is now visible in Udhayanidhi’s politics. Since the change of government, he has emerged as one of the DMK’s principal voices against the Vijay administration, attacking it on governance issues, participating in protests and increasingly becoming the face of the party’s political messaging. Credit To Vijay? The latest confrontation between the DMK and the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government has pushed Udhayanidhi into the spotlight once again. His arrest over alleged innuendos targeting Vijay and Trisha triggered sharp political reactions. The DMK has described the action as an attempt to silence the Opposition and portray it as political vendetta, while the government has maintained that the law must take its course and that no one is above it.
