Hasina, who has been residing in the Indian capital since 2024, is scheduled to virtually join the event organised by Foreign Correspondents’ Club.

This will mark her first public appearance since the collapse of the Bangladesh Awami League (BAL) government in August 2024 following a widespread student-led protest. Addressing a press conference, Shama Obaed said: “We want good relations with India. We don’t want our relations with India to be spoilt or affected. Hope India gets this". Reiterating India’s stance that the Central Government is nowhere associated with the proposed event, she added: “The Indian government has made it clear that it has nothing to do with it". India Distances Itself From Hasina’s Event On Tuesday, India addressed the stir around the planned event that is to be attended by Sheikh Hasina, asserting that it had “no involvement" in it and that it was being organised by a “private media entity". Addressing a presser, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: “The interaction you refer to is being organised by a private media entity. The government has no involvement whatsoever in it.

Neither does it endorse any views that may be expressed at the forum". Jaiswal’s remarks came after Dhaka asked India to clarify its stance on the issue. Shama Obaed said Bangladesh was seeking stable relations with India with a “forward-looking" approach as she sought New Delhi’s clarification on the matter. “We are moving forward with India with a forward-looking approach. We don’t want it to be damaged, and I firmly believe that India doesn’t want it either. So, India has to clarify whether it is supporting it or not," she had said while speaking to journalists. Hasina’s To Announce ‘Homecoming’ The event, which is being held exactly two years after a massive students’ protest in Bangladesh prompted former PM Sheikh Hasina to flee the country, is being organised by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club. The event will be held at the Sir Mark Tully Auditorium at the AB-19 Mathura Road in Delhi, while Hasina will participate virtually, marking her first public appearance since the 2024 unrest.
