A 32-year-old man accused of kidnapping and raping a girl died after being severely beaten by an angry mob in Jharkhand's Chatra district, police said, adding that eight people have been arrested in connection with the lynching. According to locals, the man, Md Emroz, had kidnapped a schoolgirl and held her hostage inside his residence for two days. The girl's family had been frantically searching for her but was unable to find any trace of her whereabouts.
The situation reached a boiling point early Tuesday morning when the minor finally returned home. She recounted her ordeal to her family, alleging that she had been held captive by Emroz, who also threatened to kill her. Read Full Story Enraged by the girl's statement, a large crowd of villagers gathered and surrounded the accused's house, subsequently launching an attack on him. Police, who reached the scene, managed to rescue a critically injured Emroz from the crowd and transported him to a local hospital.
After receiving primary treatment, he was referred to a higher medical facility, where he died during treatment. Emroz's father, Sultan Miyan, also sustained injuries during the mob's attack. Authorities have placed the girl under protection and initiated the mandatory medical examination process. The police have also recorded formal statements from the family members of the man. Local villagers claim that this was not Emroz's first offence, alleging that he had a previous rape case registered against him and had served time in jail in 2023.
