Meta is facing fresh scrutiny in India after the Commission for Protection of Child Rights ordered a formal fact-finding inquiry into linked to child sexual abuse and exploitation on Instagram. Following an earlier notice, the NCPCR decided to institute the probe to investigate safety lapses. The central government is set to raise concerns with Meta's global team regarding moderation failures, action on accounts, and safeguards against harmful AI-generated content.
The Centre has warned that Meta could lose its legal shield under Section 79 of the Information Technology Act, which protects platforms from liability over user content, exposing the company and its officials to legal and criminal liabilities.
