(AFP file photo) The Trump administration has revoked the visa of Brazil’s ambassador to the United States, marking the latest escalation in a growing diplomatic dispute between Washington and Brasilia. A US State Department official confirmed on Tuesday that Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti’s visa had been revoked. However, the official stressed that the move does not amount to expulsion and that the visa would be restored if the dispute is resolved, AFP reported.
“The visa of a senior diplomat here was revoked or cancelled. That is not the same thing as kicking the person out of the country," the official said. According to the State Department, the decision was taken after Brazil delayed granting formal diplomatic approval, or agrément, for Daniel Perez, President Donald Trump’s nominee as the next US ambassador to Brazil. “We think the government of Brazil owes us a prompt and positive answer to our request," the official said. Dispute over diplomats The latest row follows Brazil’s decision last month to deny visas to two US State Department officials who had planned to meet election authorities in Brasilia. Brazilian officials said the visit carried the “risk of political exploitation". The US, however, said the delegation intended to discuss election integrity, religious freedom and freedom of expression with government officials and civil society representatives.
A State Department spokesperson rejected suggestions that the visit was aimed at influencing Brazil’s electoral process. Relations under strain The visa dispute is the latest sign of worsening ties between the governments of President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. US officials have accused Lula’s administration of targeting conservative voices and influencing judicial proceedings, allegations Brazil has rejected. Brasilia has, in turn, accused Washington of attempting to interfere in Latin American politics. The tensions have also unfolded against the backdrop of domestic political disputes in Brazil involving former president Jair Bolsonaro and his son, Flavio Bolsonaro, who have repeatedly questioned the country’s electronic voting system. The Brazilian government did not immediately respond to the US decision.
