He added that Israel would continue protecting its citizens and territory, saying, “We are instructing IDF soldiers to do everything necessary to defend themselves, defend our territory and defend our citizens." Trump had earlier described the Gaza peace plan as a “major milestone" towards ending the devastating war triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
The ‘Board of Peace’ proposal called for Hamas to begin disarming, while Israel would halt attacks and gradually withdraw from parts of Gaza. Following the announcement, Trump had said Israel was “very happy" with Hamas’ reported commitment to disarm, but disagreements quickly emerged. Hamas has said it is willing to hand over weapons to a new Palestinian body that would oversee Gaza, but insists Israel must first stop its attacks and withdraw troops as part of the ceasefire terms. Despite the announcement of Trump’s plan, Israeli strikes in Gaza have continued. Gaza health authorities say more than 1,200 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the October ceasefire, while four Israeli soldiers have died during the same period, according to Israeli figures.
