During the overnight journey, five people were rescued after requiring emergency assistance, but the remaining passengers reportedly declined help despite offers from French patrol boats.Authorities said such refusals are common among migrants determined to reach Britain, adding that emergency teams avoided boarding the overcrowded vessel because of concerns it could become unstable.Rescue efforts intensified only after the fire broke out and the boat rapidly became unsafe.
The operation involved French rescue vessels, UK Border Force boats, the RNLI Eastbourne lifeboat, firefighters, police officers, interpreters and medical teams.French prosecutors have launched an investigation into the incident. An Egyptian national has been taken into police custody in connection with the case, although authorities have not disclosed the specific allegations.The UK government said the Border Security Command was alerted after the boat got into distress in French waters. British vessels assisted the rescue before those on board were returned to France.Border Security Minister Anna Turley said the incident highlighted the risks of illegal Channel crossings and blamed criminal smuggling networks operating along the route."It shows the dangers of these illegal crossings and the ruthless gangs behind them," she said, adding that the government was stepping up action against trafficking networks.A UK government spokesperson also said the rescue underlined the "terrible dangers" of small-boat crossings and reiterated that authorities were working closely with France to prevent such journeys.The rescue comes as immigration remains a major political issue in Britain.
