(Image: Reuters) Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday dismissed reports that he had offered to resign, saying he would remain in office and continue leading the country despite the ongoing conflict with the United States. In a televised address, excerpts of which were carried by Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency, Pezeshkian said reports of his resignation were false. “If I were going to resign, I would announce it publicly. I will not resign, and I will continue the struggle," he said. The president also rejected claims of divisions within Iran’s leadership, saying his government, the armed forces and Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei were working together.

His remarks came after several media outlets reported that he had submitted his resignation to Khamenei on multiple occasions. Leadership rejects resignation rumours The reports were fuelled by a video featuring Mohammad-Baqer Kharrazi, secretary-general of the Hezbollah of Iran group, who claimed that Pezeshkian had resigned or threatened to resign “28 times". Kharrazi also alleged that Mojtaba Khamenei had warned that any future resignation would be accepted. On Tuesday, however, the office of Mojtaba Khamenei strongly rejected those claims.
In a statement, it said the reports circulating online were “completely false and contrary to reality". It added that spreading such claims was aimed at creating public anxiety and division within Iranian society. The statement also rejected Kharrazi’s claims about planned changes to Iran’s Supreme Security Council and the country’s negotiating team. US-Iran diplomatic efforts continue The political speculation comes as Iran remains locked in tensions with the US following months of military exchanges since the war broke out in late February. Although Washington and Tehran reached a ceasefire earlier this year and later signed a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding, the agreement collapsed last month after renewed attacks. On Tuesday, Qatar confirmed that efforts to revive diplomacy were continuing, although no direct talks between the US and Iran were currently planned. Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said mediators were working towards a short-term solution that could restart broader negotiations. On Monday, US President Donald Trump had claimed that he had agreed to continue pursuing talks with Iran at the request of Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
