In an interview, DMK MP Tiruchi Siva discussed recent police action against party leaders and defended the party's leadership. Siva stated that during public addresses on key Tamil Nadu issues such as the Cauvery river dispute and the Mekedatu dam, a speaker remains focused on the main speech rather than crowd chants. Asserting that "freedom of speech and expression is a basic fundamental right," he emphasized that statutory legal mechanisms exist if speech limits are exceeded.
Siva criticized police procedures, pointing out that prior notice under BNSS Section 35(3) was not served before taking the leader into custody for interrogation in Thanjavur. He asserted that "he spoke nothing about anybody" and stated that the interrogation could have taken place at the leader's residence. Siva added that political leaders across parties face criticism and maintained that politicians in a democracy should exercise tolerance.
