Representative Image (source: AFP) India on Tuesday strongly condemned the attack on an Indian vessel that sank in the Red Sea off Yemen’s western coast after being hit by an explosives-laden boat. All 14 crew members, including 13 Indians and one Yemeni, were rescued in a joint operation by Yemen’s Navy and Coast Guard. As per reports, the ship was blown up by a Yemeni suicide boat 13 nautical miles off Hodeidah in the Bab al-Mandab. The incident marks the first known attack on an Indian ship in the Red Sea. The ship was reportedly carrying Saudi oil.
India condemns attack Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal described the strike as an “unprovoked attack" on an Indian vessel. In a post on X, he said, “Indian MSV Faize Noore Oliya has been hit by a projectile near Yemeni waters, causing the vessel to capsize and sink. India strongly condemns this unprovoked attack on the defenseless mechanised sailing vessel." He said the safety of Indian citizens remained the government’s top priority. “The safety of our people is our supreme priority & I am relieved to inform that ALL 14 seafarers (including 13 Indians) have been safely rescued by the Yemeni Coast Guard and brought to the Port of Mokha," Sonowal said. The minister added that he had directed the Director General Maritime Administration (DGMA) to immediately coordinate with all agencies to ensure the security of Indian seafarers in the region and provide every possible assistance to the rescued crew. MEA issues statement The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also condemned the attack on the Indian-flagged commercial vessel.
“We condemn the attack on the Indian flagged commercial vessel, MSV Faize Noore Oliya that sank in the Red Sea, off the coast of Yemen on August 4, 2026. All 13 Indian nationals have been rescued," the ministry said. It added that the Indian Embassy in Riyadh was closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the Yemeni authorities to ensure the safety and security of the crew. The ministry also thanked the Yemeni authorities for their assistance during the rescue operation. Concern over attacks on commercial shipping The MEA expressed concern over the continuing attacks on commercial vessels operating in the region. “The continuing incidents of attacks on commercial shipping in the region are deeply worrisome," the ministry said. It added that attacks on commercial shipping must end and called for the restoration of free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through international waterways in accordance with international law. Earlier, the government-aligned Resistance Forces in Yemen said the Indian vessel had come under attack by an explosives-laden boat off Yemen’s western coast before sinking in the Red Sea.
