(AP File photo) Bangladesh has renewed its call for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India, a day before she is set to make her first public appearance in New Delhi. Hasina is expected to address people virtually on Wednesday, in what will be her first public appearance since her ouster from Bangladesh, bringing an abrupt end to her 15-year rule. This comes ahead of her planned return to her country, where she was sentenced to death in 2025 for crimes against humanity over her handling of the protests, but she has rejected the verdict as legally invalid.
Following the deadly student protest in Bangladesh in 2024 that led to her ouster, the Awami League leader has remained in India. What Bangladesh Said About Sheikh Hasina Bangladesh’s Prime Minister’s Adviser for Information and Broadcasting, Zahed Ur Rahman, said the government is prepared to arrest Hasina if she returns. Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat on Tuesday, he said Dhaka wants her back to face legal proceedings and has conveyed its position to New Delhi through diplomatic channels, Bangladesh’s news outlet Prothom Alo reported. “She (Sheikh Hasina) says she will come. So let her come; we are ready," he said. Reiterating the government’s stance, Ur Rahman said, “We want to bring her back to face the law… She says she will come. So let her come; we are ready. And we are also saying that we will ensure justice for her.
Whatever is required under the law, she will certainly be arrested. After her arrest, she can exercise whatever legal rights she has. Whatever verdict the court delivers—whether it upholds the death penalty, acquits her, or anything else—we are prepared to accept it." Dhaka Warns Media Against Covering Hasina’s Delhi Event Further, Bangladesh has cautioned local media against carrying Hasina’s remarks, which she will make during her virtual address, marking two years since her government was ousted. Dhaka cited a tribunal order barring publication of her statements. Her aide Abu Obaidha Arin said the event would proceed, arguing that Dhaka’s “efforts to silence dissent cannot extinguish voices". Meanwhile, India has said the event was being hosted privately and had no government involvement. “The government has no involvement whatsoever in it, neither does it endorse any views that may be expressed at the forum," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.
