In what is being described as Himachal Pradesh's biggest heroin seizure of 2026, Shimla Police have arrested a 22-year-old alleged interstate drug trafficker and recovered 1.120 kg of high-grade heroin with an estimated international market value of around 6 crore. The accused, identified as Vijay Kumar, a resident of Narayangarh in Haryana's Ambala district, was intercepted by the Special Cell of Shimla Police near the Shoghi border on August 3 following specific intelligence input. Read Full Story According to investigators, Kumar had allegedly transported the heroin from Haryana and was heading to the Tara Devi area to deliver the consignment when police intercepted him and foiled the transaction.
An FIR has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further investigation is underway to identify other members of the interstate drug network and trace the supply chain. POLICE SHIFT FOCUS TO MAJOR DRUG NETWORKS Police said the seizure reflects a strategic shift in their anti-narcotics operations โ from registering a larger number of cases to targeting major suppliers and dismantling organised trafficking networks. The revised strategy focusses on commercial-quantity seizures, tracking backward linkages, conducting financial investigations, and taking action against habitual offenders under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act wherever applicable. Officials said the latest operation marks a major breakthrough in the district's ongoing campaign against organised drug trafficking.
STRING OF MAJOR DRUG BUSTS THIS YEAR Shimla Police said the district has witnessed several significant anti-drug operations in 2026. In March, investigators dismantled a major LSD trafficking network, arresting eight accused, including the alleged supplier from Kerala. The probe also led to the arrest of four police personnel for their alleged involvement in the racket. All four were subsequently dismissed from service. The district has also recorded multiple commercial-quantity heroin seizures, a major opium haul linked to alleged drug proceeds, and the arrest of several interstate suppliers from Punjab. OVER 4 KG OF HEROIN SEIZED IN 2026 According to official data, Shimla Police have seized more than 4 kg of heroin so far this year โ nearly four times the total quantity recovered during the previous two years combined.
