Though there is much relief, particularly in the Cauvery basin, following the revival of the monsoon over the past week, statistics show that Karnataka has received a -29% southwest monsoon rainfall departure between June 1 and August 4. With several parts of the State receiving heavy rainfall in recent days, the first four days of August recorded 49 mm of rainfall against the normal 35 mm, with a departure of +39%. According to data from the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), the State recorded 357 mm of rainfall against the normal 506 mm between June 1 and August 4, representing a departure of -28%.
The southwest monsoon season extends from June to September. In June, the State recorded 116 mm of rainfall against the normal 199 mm, with a departure of -42%. In July, it received 192 mm of rainfall against the normal 271 mm, with a departure of -29%. While the rainfall in June was classified under the deficit category, July was classified under the normal category. However, KSDMA said the cumulative rainfall received between June 1 and August 4 falls under the deficit category. During this period, South Interior Karnataka recorded 93 mm of rainfall against the normal 157 mm, with a departure of -40%.
North Interior Karnataka received 180 mm against the normal 236 mm, recording a -24% departure. The Malnad and Coastal regions received 686 mm and 1,618 mm of rainfall against the normal 1,028 mm and 2,114 mm, with departures of -33% and -23%, respectively. Also during this period, four districts received normal rainfall: Vijayapura (151 mm), Bagalkot (151 mm), Belagavi (349 mm) and Uttara Kannada (1,499 mm). As many as 26 districts, including Raichur, Yadgir, Bidar, Dakshina Kannada, Hassan, Tumakuru, Udupi, Chitradurga, Gadag, Chikkamagaluru, Bengaluru Rural, Shivamogga, Kalaburagi, Bengaluru South, Dharwad, Kodagu, Mandya, Chickballapur, Koppal, Davangere, Ballari, Bengaluru Urban, Haveri, Chamarajanagar, Kolar and Mysuru, received deficit rainfall.
Vijayanagar district recorded a large rainfall deficit. At the taluk level, 163 taluks received deficit rainfall, 14 recorded large deficits, and 54 received normal rainfall.
