Clear skies and warm weather greeted residents in many areas in the morning. However, the situation changed by the evening, as it started pouring again. Kozhikode district is reported to have received 257.4 mm of rain in three days from August 1, though the normal expected rainfall during the period was 60.4 mm. The India Meteorological department had earlier issued an orange alert for the district on Tuesday, which was later updated to a red alert.
An orange alert was issued again for Wednesday (August 5). The district also reported the second rain-related death in this season on Tuesday when Suhail, 38, of Peruvayal, who had been undergoing treatment after he fell into the floodwaters on August 1, died. Suhail slipped into the water when he and his friends went to see the waterlogging near their house. He could be found only after a long time in a faraway place. Suhail was later admitted to a private hospital in Kozhikode city for treatment.
A two-year-old child had recently died after falling into the waterlogged courtyard of his house. According to the district administration, the number of rain-affected people staying in 18 relief camps in four taluks has come down to 808. They belong to 327 families. There are 316 men, 363 women, and 129 children. The highest number of people is from the Kozhikode taluk. As many as 635 people from 250 families are staying in 11 camps. There are 82 people each in camps in Thamarassery and Vadakara taluks, and nine people in Koyilandy taluk.
Meanwhile, areas such as Moozhikkal, Kannadikkal, Parambilkadavu, and Kakkodi are still affected by waterlogging. A mudslip was reported near the Karassery grama panchayat office. One goods lorry overturned in Kakkadampoyil, and the driver had a narrow escape. The Wayanad district administration has imposed traffic restrictions on the Thamarassery Ghat Road.
