(File photo) RSS chief Dr Mohan Bhagwat will interact with students from Gen Z and Gen Alpha in Mumbai on August 6 as part of the International Movement to Unite Nations’ (IIMUN) 15th Annual Championship Conference. The session will be held at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre (NMACC) and is expected to bring together more than 2,000 students aged between 15 and 19 from over 100 cities, making it one of the country’s largest youth-led gatherings.
The interaction will mark the inaugural ceremony of IIMUN’s flagship annual conference, where students from schools and colleges debate and deliberate on local, national, and international issues. This year’s inaugural ceremony is centred on the theme, “The Role of Youth in Uniting the World, the Indian Way". Founded in 2011 by Rishabh Shah, IIMUN describes itself as a public affairs platform aimed at encouraging leadership and civic engagement among young people. According to the organisation, its programmes now span 275 cities across India and 40 countries, reaching over 7.5 crore young people while working with more than 1.5 lakh schools and colleges. Announcing the event, IIMUN founder Rishabh Shah said leadership is not just about guiding the next generation but also about listening to it. “At this critical juncture in India’s journey, we need this dialogue more than ever before. I am grateful to Shri Mohan Bhagwat ji for accepting our invitation to address this gathering," he said. The interaction also comes at a significant time. In recent weeks, student-led protests in Delhi over issues related to higher education and examinations have once again brought Gen Z into the national spotlight, with the agitation eventually culminating in the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Against this backdrop, Dr Bhagwat’s interaction with students is being viewed as a closely watched engagement with a generation that has increasingly asserted its voice on public policy, governance, and national issues. While the organisers have positioned the event as a dialogue on leadership and nation-building, its timing has added to the wider political interest surrounding the programme. The event has also triggered political reactions. Shiv Sena leader Shaina NC welcomed the initiative, saying the RSS has been engaging with Gen Z and millennials for the past few years and that values such as nation first, culture, discipline and civic duty have always been central to the organisation. BJP MLA Ram Kadam also said interaction with young people has always been part of the Sangh’s functioning, adding that Mohan Bhagwat has regularly engaged with people across age groups through the RSS’s network of shakhas and that the upcoming session is a continuation of that tradition. The Congress, however, expressed reservations over the exercise. Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat said dialogue is essential in a democracy but should remain open and not become a means of imposing any particular ideology.
