The Vardhanti of Goddess Chamundeshwari was celebrated with traditional gaiety and religious fervour at Chamundi Hills in Mysuru on Tuesday (August 4), drawing thousands of devotees from across the city, district and other parts of the State. The highlight of the celebrations was the grand procession of the deity in a golden palanquin around the temple premises. The procession was led by Mysuru MP and scion of the erstwhile Mysuru royal family, Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar, who was dressed in traditional attire.
Members of the royal family, including Pramoda Devi Wadiyar and Trishika Kumari Wadiyar, were present along with G.T. Deve Gowda, MLA. The Vardhanti rituals commenced in the early hours of the day, following which the temple was opened to devotees. Thousands queued up from the morning to offer prayers and witness the special celebrations, with the temple specially decorated in flowers. Amid chants in praise of the presiding deity, the utsava murti (procession idol) was taken out in the golden palanquin.
Mr. Wadiyar symbolically pulled the chariot carrying the palanquin, marking the beginning of the procession, which was taken around the temple complex. The royal family later offered special prayers inside the temple. As on Ashada Fridays, private vehicles were prohibited from proceeding to the hill, and devotees were ferried in KSRTC buses from the temporary bus stand at the foothills. Police personnel were deployed in large numbers to regulate the crowd.
The Vardhanti was also celebrated across Mysuru city, where devotees erected pandals, installed idols and portraits of Goddess Chamundeshwari, performed special pujas and distributed prasada to the public.
