The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) on Tuesday (August 4, 2026) demanded the immediate completion of Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme for the benefit of the region. YSRCP Anantapur district president Anantha Venkatarami Reddy, former minister Sake Sailajanath, and others inspected the Gorukally and Owk reservoirs in Nandyal district as part of an inspection programme for irrigation projects in the Rayalaseema region. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Venkatarami Reddy said, “Irrigation projects gained momentum only after Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy became Chief Minister.
The credit for increasing the capacity of the Pothireddypadu Head Regulator to 44,000 cusecs goes to the late Rajasekhara Reddy. It was thanks to his initiative that work on the Handri-Neeva project was taken up at a rapid pace. It was due to his efforts that Krishna waters began flowing through the Handri-Neeva project from 2012,” Mr Venkatarami Reddy said. The senior leader alleged that after becoming Chief Minister in 2014, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu neglected these projects and paid no attention to the distribution networks of Handri-Neeva, Galeru-Nagari, and Telugu Ganga, failing to supply water to the designated ayacut.
“Mr. Chandrababu Naidu is now claiming to have spent ₹3,800 crore on Handri-Neeva in just 100 days and to have increased the capacity to 3,850 cusecs. However, the flow did not even reach 2,700 cusecs,” Mr. Venkatarami Reddy said. The YSRCP leader further alleged that the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme would benefit the districts of the Greater Rayalaseema region. However, Mr. Chandrababu Naidu has compromised the region’s interests due to a secret pact with Telangana Chief Minister K.
Chandrashekar Rao. “The Telangana government is diverting water from the Srisailam project starting from 780 feet to its projects. If the Rayalaseema Lift Irrigation Scheme were completed, we too could draw larger volumes of water in a shorter span of time,” he said.
