Telangana is set to get its second major government cancer hospital, with the State government planning to establish a Regional Cancer Hospital in Warangal to provide advanced cancer care to patients from north Telangana and reduce their dependence on Hyderabad for treatment. At present, the Mehdi Nawaz Jung Institute of Oncology Regional Cancer Centre (MNJIO RCC) in Hyderabad is the State’s only tertiary-care government cancer hospital. Telangana Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha said the proposed Warangal facility would cater to patients from other parts of the State who currently have to travel to Hyderabad for specialised cancer treatment.
The Warangal Regional Cancer Hospital would be developed with advanced facilities to provide comprehensive cancer diagnosis and treatment services, the Minister said. The announcement was made during a review meeting held at the Secretariat on Tuesday, on government healthcare services and infrastructure in Warangal, Hanumakonda and Jangaon districts. MLAs from the three districts briefed the Minister about healthcare services available at government hospitals in their respective constituencies and raised issues related to infrastructure, manpower and the need to strengthen existing facilities.
The Minister directed officials to examine the issues raised by the legislators and take necessary action. He also asked officials to incorporate suggestions from elected representatives while preparing hospital development plans. The Minister said MGM Hospital in Warangal currently provides services across 29 specialties and announced that nine additional super-speciality services would be introduced shortly. The upcoming Warangal Super Speciality Hospital would also be developed as a major tertiary healthcare hub for north Telangana. Steps would be taken to equip the hospital with advanced medical equipment and provide the required specialists and other healthcare personnel to enable full-scale operations, he said.
He added that the government would also strengthen the hospitals and medical colleges at Jangaon and Narsampet as part of efforts to improve public healthcare infrastructure in the region.
