In a step towards strengthening prison reforms and prisoner rehabilitation, the Karnataka Department of Prisons and Correctional Services has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with The Justice Initiative (TJI) Foundation, Bengaluru, to implement holistic welfare and rehabilitation programmes across the State’s nine central prisons. The MoU was signed on Monday at the prisons headquarters in Bengaluru by Alok Kumar, IPS, Director General of Police, Prisons and Correctional Services, Karnataka, and Cecilia Davies, founder and executive director of The Justice Initiative Foundation.
The partnership aims to introduce professional interventions within the prison system, focusing on the welfare, rehabilitation, and successful reintegration of inmates into society. The initiative is expected to strengthen correctional services by promoting mental well-being, reducing the risk of reoffending, and enhancing opportunities for the social reintegration of prisoners through structured rehabilitation programmes. According to the Prisons Department, the initiative will include social work interventions, preventive mental health services, restorative justice programmes, and the design and implementation of individual rehabilitation and reintegration plans for prisoners.
The interventions are intended to support inmates during their incarceration as well as after their release, facilitating their transition back into society. “The primary objective of this MoU is to bring professional interventions in the prison system, with a focus on social work interventions, preventive mental health and restorative justice interventions, designing and delivering offenders' rehabilitation and reintegration plans and processes, leading to the benefit of prisoners during their incarceration and post their release.
These interventions will be introduced and carried out in a phased manner,” Mr. Kumar said. The MoU signing ceremony was attended by Nitya Nirmalkumar, programme manager, The Justice Initiative Foundation; P.V. Anand Reddy, Assistant Inspector General of Prisons; and K.C. Divyashree, Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, South Range, among other officials.
