The Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) parliamentary party group on Tuesday (August 4, 2026) held its customary weekly meeting during the monsoon session of Parliament, with presentations on the performance of India’s sportspersons in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games and, against the backdrop of the recent Gen Z protests, on employment opportunities for the young. The meeting, helmed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was attended by several Union Ministers, including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, apart from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs, and MPs from allied parties.
BJP president Nitin Nabin was seen sitting next to Mr. Modi at the meeting held at the Parliament House complex, a day after the BJP was defeated in the bypoll for Bihar’s Bankipur Assembly seat. The by-election at Bankipur, a BJP bastion, was necessitated after Mr. Nabin vacated the seat he had held for five terms, following his election to the Rajya Sabha after he assumed charge as BJP president. Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) founder Prashant Kishor wrested the seat from the BJP. Union Minister of Labour and Employment, and Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya addressed the meeting with a detailed presentation on India’s achievements in sports.
The policies adopted by the NDA government since 2014 had resulted in India now securing many awards, with gold medals in international sporting events, including the Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games, Mr. Mandaviya reportedly said. Speaking of his other portfolio, Mr. Mandaviya reportedly told MPs, “Between 2004 and 2014, when the UPA was in power, only 2.89 crore youth got jobs, while between 2014 and 2026, a total of 17.1 crore youth secured employment,” according to an MP present at the meeting. Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay, who left the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and joined the little known party, said he had attended the NDA parliamentary party meeting for the first time, but three other MPs from the rebel TMC grouping — Abu Tahir, Yusuf Pathan and Khalilur Rahman — have been absenting themselves from NDA meetings.
Bandyopadhyay, however, said they were “united in NCPI. It is a good experience.”
